Minnesota Renaissance Fest
As aluded to in the previous post, last weekend I did all things festival. On Saturday after Neighbor Kitty’s model shoot, ‘Pickpic’ and I went to the MN Renaissance Fest.

This gentleman was in our hearts and minds at the door instilling fear into what we had just gotten ourselves into.
I have not been to the Ren. Fest. in ages. The last time I remember going was when I was in elementary school and my mom chaperoned the event. Ages ago. And what I remember was not really what I saw there. You know how when you’re a kid you watch movies that have humor just a *little* above your kid like naivety but of course you have no idea at the time. Then years later you watch the same movie again and you are shocked by all the ‘adult jokes’ that were thrown in there? This was totally true for The Princess Bride. I remember watching it in my friend’s basement in MPLS when I was real young because it was her favorite movie. She made popcorn in her ‘Popcorn’ bowl and we had lemonade {or maybe it was water} out of her mason jar glasses – which by the way inspired me to use mason jars for my own glasses when I was to the point to actually have my own glasses.
But the point of that tangent was that going to the Ren. Fest. after 15 years of absence was crazy different! I am not one who likes to be ‘disturbed’ while I’m walking around. In places with large crowds I usually appreciate the crowds because I can blend in and no one sees me and no one talks to me. That way I can mill around and take photos and go on my merry way. Whoa. Not here. Here if someone saw you taking a picture of them, you most likely got jeered at. And sometimes even joined for a photo.
please excuse my creepy face. It only looks this way because I was in total shock that this guy just walked up to me and wanted to be in a photo. It could have been the fact that large leather glass in his hand was getting to a sloshingly empty state.
… and moving on
I also have never seen so many people in age appropriate dress.
I am used to the state fair or valley fair or the ‘regular’ world where Renaissance attire does not appear in large numbers. But here, I felt out of place because I was in a sweatshirt and jeans.
(thanks to Rebecca for the previous photos. They are wonderful additions to my collection of ‘weird event photos’)
The grounds itself were quite impressive.
These ‘aged’ buildings lined the complex – and whoa nelly, my sore {and quite dirty} feet can attest to the fact the grounds are huge! There was a ton of food and crafts and several games and general store type stuff. I managed to find the handmade dog bone store where the rawhide braided chew that i bought for Roux paled in comparison to the ginormous dinosaur bone I could have bought her. Sheesh! I can’t imagine what sort of dog would even know how to go about devouring something like that. I mean it was HUGE.
I also located some very cute dogs while there. In looking into the festival online I learned that you are able to bring your dogs or cats to the festival. But only your dogs and cats. No turtles. No horses. BUT to bring them in is crazy expensive! It was something like $10 if you had a photo of them which isn’t horrible BUT if you didn’t have a photo of them, you had to spend $15 and then $5 to have their picture taken. Goodness! But regardless of the cost, I saw quite a few cute pups there.
I believe this was mom to the adorable pups that were for sale at the Festival. Suuuuper cute fuz balls.
And this was a beautiful and fluffy 2 year old pup named Madeline. And directly behind her was a comedy show where a guy was throwing knives at someone else. Comedic, I know.
In addition to cute dog hunting, I took in my surroundings which included all the people, buildings and ‘attractions’ that you can do there. We found a secret garden that we ventured through.
It was a bit strange. It was back in the woods behind the festival and there were all kinds of little houses tucked back along this trail. The houses were super cute {see above} but then there were these random items just dropped along the trail that seemed a wee bit out of place {ie: the chess set with the chair so weathered there was no seat anymore. The ‘garden’ that looks more like a splattered mud pit with dead branches in it}.
But all in all the Ren Fest was an interesting experience. The kind of experience I don’t think I need again but am very glad to have spent my Saturday having. Thanks PickPic! And a post about the Ren Fest would not be complete without a series of Troy skipping along the trail…
Happy Friday! Hope others have fabulous plans for the holiday weekend. For the last zillion years I have gone camping with a group of family friends which has been great but this year we are all taking a break from that. And because of late planning Mur and I are having a Staycation right here in MPLS. Probably will go check out some wineries or brew pups or other various entertaining things. Have a good one!
Neighbor Kitty… but is she yours?
Oof Da. I’m pretty sure just my last post was exclaiming about how excited I was that my life was slowing down.
Silly me.
On Thursday of last week I needed to start calenderizing {yep- it’s a word} my life to make sure I could fit in all the fun things I want to do this fall and yikes! For the months of September and October I really only have 2 weekends without plans. What happened? I had so many aspirations for this fall that I would get this that and the other thing done, and who knows when that will happen now. And you know what comes after fall? Winter! And winter means snow, cold, holidays and overtime. Ick.
To start out my Weekends of Wonderment, which is what the fall will be called {not to be confused with Weekends of Weddings} I had a lovely photo session with a beautiful cat named Neighbor Kitty or Noelle – she responds to both.
She belongs to the family of Troy and Rebecca Widner otherwise known as PickPic. They have designed this amazing tool for photographers that one day I hope to be able to offer my clients {ie: when I save my pretty little photographer pennies}. Their ‘tool’ is this shopping cart feature that is connected directly to the photographer’s website that allows the photographer’s clients to go in and order what they would like to have printed from the slew of images. Sweet, i know.
Neighbor kitty is also super cool and snazzy, but in a less technical or computerized sort of way. She is very mellow and likes to lay on the carpet. A lot. After getting over her confusion and possible fear of being followed around her house {where she is usually the follower} she was really only interested in lying around, swatting a little and then relaxing some more. Don’t get me wrong, she is adorable when she is lounging on the carpet, but it was not exactly what I was hoping for when I had visions of photographing a cat. What I sort of expected, but not what I was hoping for.
I had visions of this

Or of this

But I got more relaxed subdued things such as…
which I am still very happy with, so thank you Neighbor Kitty {and Troy and Rebecca}! I haven’t had a ton of experience with cats yet, but that too will come. I have decided that my Christmas present to myself is going to be my litter mates. Hooray! I’m so excited already {and it’s only the first of September}! Once they arrive you can expect pretty much nothing but kitty cat photos sprinkled with my other sessions. But knowing me, it will be mostly kitties.
But I digress to my wishes and wants… Neighbor Kitty. Her name really has quite an interesting story. When they first asked me to take photos of Neighbor Kitty, I had a picture in my head of this stray cat in their neighborhood that they had just taken a liking to. Not the case as it turns out. Neighbor Kitty, and her family, hail from Portland, OR originally. They moved here about a year 1/2 ago and up until the move, Neighbor Kitty was just that – she was their neighbor’s kitty. After much time spent over at their home, when they decided to move to the great state of MN, they got the ok to take her along with them. After some kitty sleeping pills, her and her new parents made the move to their lovely new home in Eagan, MN where Neighbor Kitty is the queen of her abode – even if the walls are lacking in decor.
Up next? More to do about my ‘to do’ during my Weekend of Festivals
Weekends
Now that things are finally slowing down a bit, I am starting to really enjoy weekends again. They are no longer something that is a nice break from work but so much work I would almost rather be at work. And I can’t believe another one is upon me! Last weekend, for example, I used my bike twice – which is more than I have all summer. I enjoyed a good sampling of the Lake Maid August Schell beer and caught some good sized fish doing so. I visited an art show where a piece of mine was on display {in a great location, in case you were curious}. I garage sale shopped and scored! I fell in love with the porch out back that has now been named ‘The Square.’ I decided on the Nelson family Christmas presents – in August. I got laundry washed and then got to let it air dry on the close line – something that was familiar yet foreign up until recently. I had my Terabyte of everything moved to my apartment and with the help of my pa got that hooked up, so now my life on a computer is totally up and running again!
As an attempt to get back onto a regular working schedule I have a previous ‘mini-session’ to show photos from. Deb and Jason were so kind to let me come over and play with Penny and Lucy in their backyard one Sunday afternoon – which turned out to be one of the hottest afternoons I’ve felt all summer. Ick. But the dogs were great! Lucy was dealing with some ‘selective hearing’ but fun none-the-less.
Meet Penny…
She is a beautiful, spunky Wheaton terrier that has a face full of hair that is impossible not to love. She was really enjoying bounding around the yard and checking out the camera in hand. Deb got Penny through through Iowa Wheaten Rescue. For more information on the great organization go here. And to read Penny’s story you can go here at Iowa Wheaten Rescue Rescue Stories List
Meet Lucy…
See Lucy run. Far. From. Me. She didn’t really want too much to do with ‘the new girl’ or the camera. But I do have some favorites from the shoot!
I love this one of Mom+Penny!
Thanks again Verber family!
Do I Hear a Yahoo?
I have a new computer! Horay!!

And it has a web cam. I’ve always thought web cams were a bit on the silly side. I’ve never really had the need to chat with someone through my computer visually and instead I have found texting or email to be a very suitable way to reach someone. But regardless I can see it’s value, just not for me. So when I learned the computer came with a web cam I figured I would never use it because I just don’t have that need. Silly me. Until very very recently (ie: me with the commputer on my lap, in pajamas and loading programs) I thought the web cam only did video. But why would technology stop there? It takes some not so great still photos too but whoa nelly, I can tell there is some fun to be had with this baby. Anyways – needed to post a mini update but NOW i can finalllly get more projects accomplished (and photos managed and dogs found and art created). So if your pictures have been neglected, I have no more excuses. They will be gloriously displayed soon.
Chao!
